The gouges are removed with this lovely Sears tool they call a 3-D Sander. The three sanding heads can tilt so that the sander can handle both concave and convex surfaces. It is the only one of its kind as far as I know. It couldn’t handle the original uneven surface covered with glue but after the belt sander it worked reasonably well.
