A rotary tool is used to put in the grooves for each of the holes (lower pair - sorry the pictures not clear) to let rope slip easily through the holes.  Then rope (lanyard) is led back and forth between the deadeyes as if they were triple blocks.  The upper left deadeye is attached to a brass rod which will be attached to the ship and the upper right deadeye has a rope seized to it.
