The panels have been 'seamed' together using a very strong basting adhesive.  The seam is nominally 1/2", however, at the top and bottom the seams are a little wider which cause the sail to have a little 'belly' in it.  This is why the sail does not actually lie flat on the table.  This belly improves the efficiency of the sail.
